FISSURE SEALANTS
FISSURE SEALANTS
Sealants can protect your children’s back teeth, so that they may never need to have a filling!
What are fissure sealants?
Sealants are a protective plastic covering, which our dentist applies to the chewing surface and sides of tooth at risk of decay.
How do fissure sealants protect teeth?
The chewing surfaces of back teeth have small grooves or fissures which often extend right down into the tooth inner layer. However, even with tooth brushing, these fissures are very difficult to clean thoroughly. Bacteria and food particles stick into these grooves and eventually cause decay.
Even fluoride in drinking water or toothpaste which helps protect the smooth sides of the tooth, can’t fully protect these high risk areas against decay
Fissure sealants completely seal off these grooves, preventing any food particles or bacteria from entering into these grooves.
Fissure Sealant placement is a simple one visit procedure which can have long lasting preventative benefits to your teeth.
